The First Time for a Lasting Impression

It was a splendid, sunny day. It was my first visit to Haig Point on Daufuskie Island. Little did I know what a lasting impression it would have on me.

Prior to my visit, I had never heard of Haig Point or Daufuskie Island. Of course, I had heard for years about Hilton Head Island. So when I came to Haig Point for a visit, I was prepared for beautiful surroundings, moderate weather and inviting beaches. I was also prepared for traffic, crowds and stress. Thankfully, I had much of the former and none of the latter. And it all started with the ferry.

I had been on a ferry only one time prior in Cape Cod as a tourist to see the Kennedy Compound. So when I walked down the dock to the Haig Point ferry, I was pleasantly surprised at the immediate comfort and friendliness of the staff, residents and members. For the next 30 minutes, I felt myself relax and enjoy the magnificent water ride and sights. Was that a pod of dolphins racing us? Was the Atlantic Ocean ever more glorious? Were these riders actually having face-to-face conversations instead of on their phones?

By the time we docked at Haig Point, I had a sense of calm that’s easy to describe with a sound more than a word–that of “ahhh.” And it lasted for the entire time I was there. Needless to say, Haig Point made quite an impression on me!
