History in the Making
Haig Point celebrates the country's 240 years and the community's 30 years this weekend.

Haig Point residents and members are gearing up for a fantastic Fourth of July holiday weekend this year with five days of food, frivolity and fun. The festivities begin with a cocktail party on Thursday evening at the Beach Club; happy hour and live entertainment by the Nowhere Band on Friday; an 80s-themed dinner and dance on Saturday with the Whitehouse Party Band; kids’ activities on Sunday; and all culminating at a resplendent Independence Day Celebration with golf cart parade, kids’ activities, ice cream social, buffet and front-row seats to area fireworks.

The events are designed to celebrate the history of our country, and also the 30-year anniversary of Haig Point. The island community’s history dates back to 1735 when George Haig I purchased 500 acres of Daufuskie Island. In 1986, International Paper set up extensive infrastructure, restored the lighthouse and hired Rees Jones to build the initial golf course. Also at this time, the historic Strachan Mansion was moved from St. Simons Island, Georgia to Haig Point.
