Moving up the Career Ladder

Date

The number one priority of the Marine Department is ensuring a safe
and enjoyable ferry experience for Members and guests. This is achieved
through the commitment and dedication of our Marine staff. To keep
attracting and maintaining quality Marine candidates, we have created the
Marine Career Ladder program.

The Marine Career Ladder is a professional skills development program
that provides Boat Mates an opportunity to become Captains within one
year of entering the program. Former Boat Mates Stephanie Hodge and
Robert Stevens took advantage of this development opportunity and
completed the program earlier this year. They are now licensed to operate
any of our Haig Point ferry vessels as Captains following in the footsteps
of previous program graduates: Captains Antonio Chalmers, Robert Levis,
Joshua Eben and Chris Kennedy.

Eligibility for the Marine Career Ladder program requires Boat Mates to
have a minimum of 4-6 hours of training per shift for 360 days to be able
to sit for the Coast Guard’s Inland Operators License exam. When passed,
they will be licensed to operate vessels up to 100 tons.

Interested candidates for the Marine Career Ladder program should
