Fittingly, on the 5th year anniversary of Haig Point’s first Oyster Reef Build, the community celebrated by building a second reef! The original reef was deemed a success and scheduled for its addition in 2019. Unfortunately, weather, scheduling conflicts, and of course, COVID postponed the project.
Haig Point was able to team up with South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’s South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement Project (SCORE) to complete the project. South Carolina Oyster Recycling and Enhancement (SCORE) is a community-based habitat restoration and monitoring program of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Oysters are critical to South Carolina’s ecology, economy, and culture, and the oyster shell is the best resource to sustain oyster populations. Recycled shell is placed back onto the shoreline either during large-scale plantings or volunteer-based oyster reef builds. SCORE works with over 4,000 volunteers every year in a variety of ways to help with these endeavors.
